Figuring Things Out

I intend for this blog to be a place for me figure out how to create a career out of the things I like, namely environmental engineering, good food, writing and talking to people . This is the summer before my senior year of college, which seems like an excellent time to go about this whole business.

This summer I am interning at an organic farm because that is where good food comes from. My major at school is technically forest engineering and I am focusing on ecological engineering. Ecological engineering is designing ecosystems for the benefit of both humans and the environment. Agriculture, particularly sustainable, organic agriculture, is a heavily managed ecosystem. My goal this summer is to witness an agroecosystem in action that is both a business and part of a local food scene. I'm six weeks into my internship and so far this seems like an effective way of accomplishing my goal. I have even gotten to do some writing for the newsletter.

I have toyed with the idea of going into environmental journalism, but I think I want to write about things I get to do and design teams I am a part of, rather than tell people about all the exciting things that other people are doing. I will probably change my mind again. Right now, I'd like to design urban agriculture systems and write about them. The trick is that there are a very limited number of people doing this outside of academia. It seems both daunting and liberating that I am choosing something so brand new.

Stay tuned to watch me make it up as it comes along!
